Indian River Trip

The Indian River trip launches on Burt Lake at The Tuscarora Township Park at Devoe Beach and winds along the Inland Waterway of Northern Michigan. (If it is a windy or wavy day we may launch at the public ramp on Witt Blvd across from the boathouses.)  After a short safety and paddling review on the beach you will paddle out around the channel breakwater and enter the Indian River Channel.  Morning trips are usually quiet water paddling experiences. You may pass by pontoons boats and other kinds of boaters as you paddle past cottages, parks, a couple of restaurants, as well as the local fishing and bait shop, before going under the Straits Highway Bridge and North Central Trail Bridge. Up next you will pass a tributary at the confluence of the Little Sturgeon River on your right. Then you will pass the Marina Park boat launch, more cottages, and Marinas before going under the  I75 bridge. After the bridge, you follow the winding river out to the Indian River Spreads. The area after the bridge is lined with reed beds as it widens before it meets up with the Southern end of Mullett Lake.  This trip ends at a private estate off N Grandview Beach Road unless windy and wavy conditions exist then it will end the Inland Rte road end just before The Landings on Indian River off Bowersock Rd. Enjoy paddling through town and then along the waterway watching for fish, loons, otters and other wildlife among the reed beds of the Indian River Spreads. Your trip ends at a dock on a private estate along the Straits area. There is a kayak well on the small dock to hold your boat steady while you get out one at a time. You will take your boat out of the water onto the shore. Next you will carry your kayak up the hill from the lake to meet our Courtesy van which will pick you up at the end of your trip and return you to your car at BrassWind Landing.  You will follow the fence line for the goat pasture, past the small fish pond near the Big House, follow along the fence towards the small, quaint cedar barn and up the hill where you will find the van parked near the large 120′ long green house which is just beyond and to the right of a small cottage.

Beach Kayak or SUP Rental

We deliver the kayaks to DeVoe Beach, a  Tuscarora Township Park, where you can park your car and in addition to kayaking or paddle boarding you can enjoy a picnic lunch, swimming or sunbathing from the beach.  You can paddle in the swim area and out from the beach out along the shoreline of  Burt Lake for a bit and then into the mouth of the Indian River then paddle through the village as far as the confluence of the Little Sturgeon River at Marina Park and then back up the River to the Beach.  You can also take a little detour on the Little Sturgeon River through the tunnel under the bridge to Marina Park.  Or continue on the Indian to the I75 Bridge and then paddle upstream back to Burt Lake where we will pick up again. It takes a little more effort to paddle up the river but is still a nice ride and gives you an opportunity to take in the sites on the other side of the river that you missed on your way down. After your paddle adventure please rinse the kayaks off,  bring them back up and place them on the lawn by the DeVoe Beach sign along the center walkway where we will pick them up or the afternoon rental will be able to find them.
