The GLE Center was established as an “Eco-Adventure” enterprise employing sustainable tourism practices by involving local businesses and communities, thereby benefiting all. In keeping with the goal of involving local businesses Great Lakes Eco-Adventures is partnering with BrassWind Landing.
About Great Lakes Eco-Adventures
Dave Van Slembrouck and his Father Jerry, along with their partner Doug Engler, provided exciting outdoor adventures with the goal of inspiring their guests to “expand their horizons” and become enthralled with the Great Lakes, Northern Michigan, and its communities.
In 2014 a decision was made by the partners to focus on other adventures. David fell in love and moved to Traverse City where he will eventually develop new eco-adventures. Jerry and his wife Vickie bought a farm North of Burt Lake and are enjoying semi-retirement. Doug is an active duty police officer with the Cheboygan County and is focusing on more competitive cycling events. The Yurt will be moving to the Van Slembouck’s farm.
Home base for the GLE Center was rustic Indian River, Michigan, which is ideally situated on:
– The North Central State Recreational Trail consisting of a 62 mile rail to trail bike/hike path from Gaylord to Mackinaw City.
– The famous Inland Waterway, a 38 mile chain of rivers and lakes cutting across Northern Lower Michigan from Petoskey to Lake Huron including Crooked Lake, Burt Lake, the Indian River, Mullett Lake and the Cheboygan River in Cheboygan, Michigan.
– The 105,000 acre Pigeon River Country State Forest, and the 80 mile High Country Pathway which encompasses the beautiful Pigeon River and Pigeon River Valley.
– The gateway to the Great Waters region of Michigan where Lakes Michigan, Huron, and Superior meet. This Great Lakes inland shoreline extends from Munising to Sault Ste. Marie on Lake Superior, the Les Cheneaux Islands and the communities of Cedarville, Hessel, St Ignace and Mackinac Island on Lake Huron to Manistique on Lake Michigan.
