Have you tamed the dragon yet? Take and adventure on the Sturgeon River. It is the fastest river in lower Michigan filled with wildlife, clear water swimming holes, sandy spots to stop for lunch and then wilder turns and currents under the cedar trees from Rondo to North White Road. If Dragon taming isn’t really your style take a quiet water trip the pristine Indian River from DeVoe Beach at Burt Lake to the Indian River Spreads or Mullett lake as far as Topinnabee, Michigan. The Inland waterway provides fabulous scenery as well with the busier boating waters through Quaint Village of Indian River, its cottages and homes out towards Mullett Lake where you pass through reed beds and shorelines of grasses and water lilies. Many kayakers see the otter, loons, mergansers and other ducks, turtles and eagles.
BrassWind Landing is located just West of the main street of Indian River (Straits Highway). Look for the large blue roof at 6240 Mack Avenue. If you are coming by car take exit 310 to the traffic light. Turn right (north), about 3 blocks just past Pat and Gary’s North turn left. Mack avenue just North of the Party Store downtown and across from BC Pizza. Watch for the new Great Lakes Eco coming to Indian River in the Spring of 2012. The bicycle shop will feature Eco Tours along the trail, with overnight trips and will be coordinating kayaking trips with us.
We currently offer guided kayak trips and kayak lessons and instruction with River Guide. Rick Meisterheim. We also have a naturalist, Tom Reed, available for eco tours along the Rail Trail or rivers. Learn more about the flora and fauna that you pass by. Please call ahead to make reservations for guided trips or eco tours. We would suggest at least a weeks notice for custom guided trips. Regular river kayak trips or rentals for Burt Lake and Mullett Lake can reserved in advance and we welcome walk ins. We are open Wednesday through Sunday with Tuesday trips by chance or by appointment.

The North Central trail website says: “This beautiful 62-mile trail, newly resurfaced with crushed limestone in the fall of 2007, has become one of the premier cycling trails in the Midwest. Its flat terrain makes for easy bicycling through an area of great and diverse natural beauty. Most users’ highlights will include the valley of the Sturgeon River and its tributaries and the section north of Topinabee along the west side of Mullet Lake.”
