Cycling the Rail Trails

What a great day. Bike from Wolverine, Michigan to Indian River. Stop in the village of Indian River and visit BrassWind Landing. We are just one block from the rail trail. Enjoy a color tour by kayak or a summertime paddle and cool off by paddling a kayak on the Sturgeon River or the Indian River.  We can plan a custom trip based on your your bicycling choices for the day.  The North Central Trail, for hiking and biking, and BrassWind Landing Boat Rental in Indian River, are conveniently located near hotels, motels and Ice Cream and fudge shops as well as restaurants and stores; even the Beach on Burt Lake or in Topinabee, Michigan. We recommend the Silent Sport Lodge Bed and Breakfast along the West Branch of the Sturgeon River in Wolverine as a great place to start your bike trip or stop over. Book a Paddle, Pedal & a Pillow mini-vacation by calling Rhonda at Silent Sport Lodge at 231-525-6166. Enjoy  2 nights with breakfast at the Silent Sport Lodge B&B and River Cabin on the West Branch of the Sturgeon River and 2 kayaking trips on the Sturgeon River or the Indian River and 2 half day hybrid bicycle rentals from Great Lakes Eco-Adventure Center.  Enjoy riding on the rail trail or around town and beautiful Burt Lake, and Mullett Lake Rail Trail.

Sturgeon River Trip

Have you tamed the dragon yet?  Take and adventure on the Sturgeon River. It is the fastest river in lower Michigan filled with wildlife, clear water swimming holes, sandy spots to stop for lunch and then wilder turns and currents under the cedar trees from Rondo to North White Road. If Dragon taming isn’t really your style take a quiet water trip the pristine Indian River from DeVoe Beach at Burt Lake to the Indian River Spreads or Mullett lake as far as Topinnabee, Michigan. The Inland waterway provides fabulous scenery as well with the busier boating waters through Quaint Village of Indian River, its cottages and homes out towards Mullett Lake where you pass through reed beds and shorelines of grasses and water lilies. Many kayakers see the otter, loons, mergansers and other ducks, turtles and eagles.

Indian River

BrassWind Landing is located just West of the main street of Indian River (Straits Highway).  Look for the large blue roof at 6240 Mack Avenue. If you are coming by car take exit 310 to the traffic light. Turn right (north), about 3 blocks just past Pat and Gary’s North turn left. Mack avenue just North of the Party Store downtown and across from BC Pizza. Watch for the new Great Lakes Eco coming to Indian River in the Spring of 2012. The bicycle shop  will feature Eco Tours along the trail, with overnight trips and will be coordinating kayaking trips with us.

We currently offer guided kayak trips and kayak lessons and instruction with River Guide. Rick Meisterheim.  We also have a naturalist, Tom Reed, available for eco tours along the Rail Trail or rivers. Learn more about the flora and fauna that you pass by. Please call ahead to make reservations for guided trips or eco tours. We would suggest at least a weeks notice for custom guided trips. Regular river kayak trips or rentals for Burt Lake and Mullett Lake can reserved in advance and we welcome walk ins. We are open Wednesday through Sunday  with Tuesday trips by chance or by appointment.

North Central Trail Info at Click here for North Central Page. The North Central trail website says: “This beautiful 62-mile trail, newly resurfaced with crushed limestone in the fall of 2007, has become one of the premier cycling trails in the Midwest. Its flat terrain makes for easy bicycling through an area of great and diverse natural beauty. Most users’ highlights will include the valley of the Sturgeon River and its tributaries and the section north of Topinabee along the west side of Mullet Lake.”

Overnight Kayak Camping Trips & Eco Tours

We are planning an overnight kayak camping trip on the Sturgeon. Camping will be at the Haakwood  State Park Campground. River Trip starts at Trowbridge the first afternoon with a two hour paddle followed by a camp side dinner with Naturalist Tom Reed who is also quite a chef when it comes to cooking natural foods including Wild Rice and Queen Anne’s Lace in Tempura and any Fresh Fish you may have caught!  The second day of kayaking begins after a wonderful riverside breakfast.  More about Tom and his Nature Tours and Talks soon. I learned a lot of interesting things about the flora and fauna last time we went kayaking on the Sturgeon River!

River Guide and Instructor, Rick Meisterheim is available for a guided eco tour session on the Sturgeon River as well as kayak instruction and lessons. Rick is well versed on the Sturgeon River as he is Program Director at Wolverine Camps and River Rafting Guide at Big Bear Adventures in the Winter. He also teaches kayaking in the winter months at an indoor  pool in Petoskey.

Here is a link to the BrassWind Landing Facebook Page with more pictures of the camp side cuisine and Tom. Please like us on facebook. Click here to find the photos album on facebook.

We will be adding a page just about our Eco Trips soon. In the mean time, since all our trips are customized for our guest kayakers, please contact us by email or give us a call at 231-753-8029. Tom is also available for nature talks along the Rail Trail for hikers and bikers.

For Overnight Kayaking trips on the Sturgeon River with a bit of extra pampering you can spend the second night at the Silent Sport Lodge Bed and Breakfast in Wolverine. This beautiful custom log home is a Bed and Breakfast nestled in the woods near the West Branch of the Sturgeon River in Wolverine Michigan. On weekends you would need to stay for 2 nights. If your Overnight camping trip is scheduled during the week or the night you would swish to stay at the Bed and Breakfast for 1 night is Thursday that would work out well.
